Cardiff must take this chance - boss Dave Jones

Ledley wants Cardiff play-off glory

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has urged his side to make their most of their chance after reaching the play-offs in Saturday's 1-0 win at QPR.

Joe Ledley gave the Bluebirds the play-off spot with two games to spare.

Jones said: "I've told them now we're there we want to do it right, so don't take your foot off the gas.

"It's no good getting there and thinking 'that's it'. We're in a position we've never been in before and let's see where it leads us."

Jones says the pressure can only increase as the play-offs approach.

It [reaching the play-offs] just shuts up a lot of people as well, which is something that doesn't normally happen in South Wales

But he has targeted ending the regular season third in the Championship with games against Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County to come.

He added: "We're chasing down [Nottingham] Forest now - that's our goal, to try and finish third. That's where we want to finish."

However, Jones says the Bluebirds have already silenced their doubters by reaching the play-offs, a feat they failed to achieve last season as a promising campaign ended in disappointment.

The Cardiff boss says tension has been eased by already reaching the play-offs and that constant reminders of that 2008-09 failure during the latter stages of this campaign have been unhelpful.

He added: "With us not being there it would have given us just a little bit of jangly nerves and everything else, but they'll all disappear now.

Jones warns of mounting pressure

"There's been a quiet confidence, but there has been a lull around with locals hammering it down our throats about last year and everything else and in all honesty they haven't really helped the cause.

"We've tried to keep everything low key, but as soon as you pick up something or hear a radio station, it's all about last year.

"Well, we've got rid of that so let's see how far we can push on now.

"What it does for this football club, the fans who travelled to QPR, the fans who are travelling every week - it just shuts up a lot of people as well, which is something that doesn't normally happen in South Wales.

"So I think the fans can be proud of what their team has done and what they've done all season."

Jones praised local hero Ledley, who has recently returned from double hip surgery, and the manner of the goal the Welsh international scored.

"They're [QPR] a dangerous side - there were lots of shots from distance, but we defended it well again and we got the break.

"It was a cutting edge goal, really, because we broke on them so quick I think we caught them cold and it was a good finish again by Joe.

"Joe has come back and we've noticed him get fitter and stronger and as the game wore on, in this heat as well, he looked strong so we know we're getting him back.

"Defensively as a team we looked solid. We just need to push up on maybe our attacking qualities and get back to hopefully scoring lots of goals."
