Matthews has played for the Bluebirds 12 times this season

Cardiff City have played down reports linking teenager Adam Matthews with a January move to Manchester United.

The 17-year-old full-back broke into the first team this season and has made 13 appearances for the Bluebirds.

"It's all speculation," manager Dave Jones told BBC Sport Wales on newspaper claims a £5m-plus move to Old Trafford had been agreed.

"Last week it was Jay Bothroyd going to Aston Villa and the week before it was Peter Whittingham going to Sunderland."

Matthews made his Cardiff debut in the 1-1 draw at Blackpool in August and has gone on to make 13 league appearances, scoring once - from half-way line in the 4-0 win at Watford.

The Swansea-born youngster was given his chance following injuries in the Bluebirds defence and has earned the plaudits for his mature, solid displays.

Matthews was called into the Wales senior squad for the 3-0 friendly win over Scotland, but did not feature.

But he did win his first Under-21 cap four days later in the 1-0 defeat to Bosnia-Hercegovina.

"Sometimes I think you [the Press] are bored and just pluck out a name and put it down and start writing it," added Jones.

"We've had no enquiries and no offers. We had the same situation with Aaron Ramsey.

"We think it's quite good that players are getting spoken about at this football club because it means they must be doing something right and they must be doing well as players themselves."

Matthews has declared himself fit for the visit of Roy Keane's Ipswich after missing out on the 1-0 defeat at Barnsley last weekend with a groin injury picked up on U21 duty.

And Jones knows Cardiff need to get back to winning ways against the struggling Tractor Boys after picking up one point from their last three games.

"It's how we bounce back," said Jones. "We've gone from being the form team in this division to losing the last two games.

"We've tried to pin-point the reasons why. You can look at injuries and everything else, but we feel we've stepped off the mark in our work rate and quality in certain positions and we've got to get that right."

Fifth-place Cardiff are faring much better than Ipswich who are next to bottom in the Championship with just one win from 17.

But Jones insists he will not be handing out any sympathy to former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland international Keane.

"Roy doesn't want my sympathy or anybody elses," he added. "We all have a job to do.

"If I was in a similar situation, would Roy be thinking about me? No, and I'm not going to be thinking about Roy - and that's the right attitude to have."
