Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Darren Dennehy is poised to join Cardiff City from Everton.
The 19-year-old is in talks with the FA Cup finalists about signing a three-year deal at Ninian Park.
Cardiff boss Dave Jones hopes to complete the free signing of Dennehy before the team returns for pre-season training on 30 June.
Dennehy graduated from the Goodison Park academy and can play at centre-back and in midfield.
Dennehy, who joined the Everton academy in 2005, was offered a Premier League contract by Toffees boss David Moyes but he felt joining Championship side Cardiff would be better for his career development.
He is set to be Cardiff's third signing of the summer as Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has joined on loan while Miguel Comminges has arrived from Swindon Town.
