Five Cardiff players have agreed wage cuts so the club can afford to pay West Bromwich Albion defender Darren Purse, who is on his way to the Bluebirds. Alan Lee, Rhys Weston, Tony Warner, Chris Barker and Neil Alexander have had their contracts extended.
But they have taken what club chairman Sam Hammam called "substantial reductions in their wages".
He added: "If I can put it bluntly, with that reduction we can not only buy Purse but pay the wages for him."
Hammam praised the players' attitude and said it showed the "spirit" within the club.
According to Purse's agent, the 28-year-old centre back has told Cardiff he would be joining them rather than Championship rivals Southampton.
Cardiff are also trying to complete a deal to sign Italian Andreas Ferretti who is currently on trial from Serie A club Parma.
The signing of Celtic's David Fernandez is also a possibility as Cardiff manager Dave Jones seeks five new signings, including Purse.
But Hammam warned that three more players could leave for budget purposes.
