 | | Thursday, 13 September, 2001, 10:51 GMT 11:51 UK Thorne joins Bluebirds  Peter Thorne pictured at Ninian Park on Thursday Cardiff City have smashed their transfer record by paying �1.75m for Stoke striker Peter Thorne. Thorne's fee eclipses the former club record of �1m that Cardiff paid Stoke for Graham Kavanagh in June. It takes chairman Sam Hammam's spending to around �4m since the Bluebirds gained promotion to Division Two. Thorne said: "It's really exciting. I know what Sam's done before. "It's a great club with a great squad and great fans. So let's hope we can get promotion." Manchester-born Thorne was Stoke's leading scorer last season with 19 goals and the Bluebirds will also hope he can resurrect the understanding he developed playing with Kavanagh at the Potteries club. Thorne said: "It definitely helps going to a new club when you know somebody. "Obviously I have got Kav here, and that'll help me get to know the players better."
A proportion of the money from the sale is due to Swindon Town as part of a sell-on clause agreed when Thorne moved from Wiltshire to Stoke in 1997 for �500,000. Thorne's arrival was announced on the same day that the club were dealt a bitter injury blow. Wales under-21 marksman Robert Earnshaw could be out for up to six weeks after having a cartilage operation on his troublesome knee. Earnshaw was the Bluebirds' top scorer last season and has already got off the mark again this term. | |
