Phil Law has stepped down as chairman of Cambridge United and has handed the role over to board member Terry Baker.
Law had held the position at the Blue Square Premier side since January and said criticism from fans had contributed to his decision.
He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "In the past few weeks there's been quite a lot of criticism levelled at me and other staff at the football club.
"I felt someone needed to take a stand against the over-zealous criticism."
He added: "In football there seems to be a shelf-life of a couple of years.
"I feel now is the right time to step down and let someone else take us to another level."
Law admitted he had had disagreements with other members of the Cambridge board but insisted they were not the main reason behind his departure.
"Myself, the board and the chief executive have had differences of opinion but that happens in any business and it's healthy that you do," he said.
"The business has been very successfully run over the last two years and I'm very proud of the contribution I've been able to make in turning it around."
