We did not perform well - Quinn

Jimmy Quinn
Quinn believes his side underperformed at Wembley

Cambridge United boss Jimmy Quinn has admitted his side never really got going in the play-off final.

The U's will remain in the Blue Square Premier next season after losing 1-0 to Exeter at Wembley.

"I'm very proud of them (the players), we've had a great season, but we were miles off it today," Quinn told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"I think the same sort of thing happened to Exeter last season when they froze."

Cambridge were slow to settle into the match and, despite seeing his side grow in stature as the game progressed, Quinn had no complaints about the result.

"The better team won the game, we gave a bad goal away from a set play which gave them something to hang onto," he said.

I'm disappointed for the fans, they've been like an extra man all season

"They dug in and defended very, very well...we didn't do enough to score a goal."

More than 21,000 U's fans travelled to Wembley in the hope of seeing their side return to the Football League following a three year absence.

Following the match Quinn said he felt their pain.

"I'm disappointed for the fans, they've been like an extra man all season and to go out and under perform like we did, we owe them one."

However the former Shrewsbury and Swindon boss is already making plans for next season and says he knows where his side are falling short.

"I just think we need a bit of extra fire-power, we need a couple of players who are going to get 15-20 goals for us."
