Cambridge boss Beck quits
Former Cambridge manager John Beck
John Beck has failed to rekindle former glories
Cambridge United manager John Beck has resigned after only eight months in the job.

Beck, in his second spell as United boss, stepped down following Tuesday's 2-0 home defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Wrexham.

Shayne Westley, Beck's assistant at the Abbey Stadium, has also resigned.

I regrettably agreed to accept his resignation
Cambridge chairman Reg Smart
John Taylor has taken over as caretaker manager and will be assisted by Dale Brooks until a permanent replacement is named.

Cambridge chairman Reg Smart revealed: "The poor results, performances and attendances this season have put this club in a position that needs to dramatically improve in the near future.

"John and I both agreed that this was unlikely to happen quickly and I therefore regrettably agreed to accept his resignation and make the change."

Brooks paid tribute to Beck's management, despite the club's precarious position near the foot of the Second Division.

"John's effort for Cambridge United, both during his previous spell as manager and during his latest short reign, will be remembered by the club and the fans for the good things it gave the U's," he added.

"We would not be a Second Division club today had he not turned our fortunes round following his appointment towards the end of last season.

"I am sure that, given time, John would have been able to build a successful team.

"Unfortunately, he just did not have any more time.

"John Beck was the hardest manager I have worked with and I feel sorry that all his hard work has not resulted in a longer and more successful period in charge."

The club insist they will take their time in the search for a new manager.
