Burnley striker Steve Thompson faces several weeks out after he has a planned operation on a groin injury.

The 32-year-old, who joined Burnley from Cardiff in September 2008, is set to undergo surgery on 1 March.

He told BBC Radio Lancashire: "It's important that I get it done, particularly for my own health among other things.

"Hopefully I'm not going to miss too many games and I'd like to be back involved before the end of the season."

Thompson scored Burnley's equaliser in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Cardiff after coming on as a second half substitute.

His goal extended the Clarets' unbeaten run to three games and means they have now only lost once in their last nine matches.

"It's important we keep the run going," said the former Scotland international.

"I think the one thing we've been missing this season is momentum and we've done that now. To take four points out of the away games at Watford and Cardiff is very credible, but we need to build on that. It's all very well winning here, but you can't then go and lose your next game.

"We're feeling a bit of confidence in the changing room and hopefully that carries on."
