Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez will be out of action for three months after fracturing his ankle in Wednesday night's reserve-team win over Hull.
The 20-year-old, who made his first-team debut against Bristol City in December 2007, underwent a scan after landing awkwardly.
"We are devastated for the lad and our primary concern is for him," said manager Owen Coyle.
"It's another blow to lose him on the back of the other injuries we've had."
Coyle added: "I know Jay will get the best possible care under our team of physios and we look forward to him coming back as soon as possible to play a part in the remainder of our season."
Rodriguez, who scored five goals last season, has only made two appearances during the current campaign, both in the Carling Cup.
He joins fellow striker Martin Paterson and midfielder Chris McCann on the treatment table.
Both players are expected to be out for a similar length of time with knee injuries.
