Burnley lament meagre attendances

Burnley chairman Barry Kilby has reiterated his desire to do everything possible to increase home attendances.

The last game against Plymouth saw just 10,032 through the gates - the lowest league attendance at the club on a Saturday in almost nine years.

"We've just got to keep playing well and hope the fans return," Kilby told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It is difficult because people in football are experiencing this everywhere you go."

I think we're roughly about the third smallest in the home attendances

The club have introduced various initiatives in an attempt to increase average attendances.

But Kilby believes the main focus should be on season-ticket holders.

Kilby added: "We tried a few things not connected to football which got criticism from certain fans, so you can't win sometimes.

"It's a difficult balancing act because you can't go overboard and devalue the season-ticket holder.

"The season tickets are steady, but it's the walk-ups on a Saturday who are being chipped away at."

And he admitted there are a number of factors beyond the club's control which are having an impact on gate numbers.

"The away attendances are certainly being affected," said Kilby.

"We had an average of about 1,500, and that's now dropped below the 1,000 mark.

"It is general throughout the league, but it makes our job difficult because I think we're roughly about the third smallest in the home attendances."
