David Unsworth says winning promotion with Burnley would rank among the highlights of a career which is set to reach 500 appearances on Saturday.

The 34-year-old defender is currently with his eighth club having started at Everton as a trainee in 1992.

Unsworth told BBC Radio Lancashire he rates the FA Cup triumph of 1995 with Everton as his best moment but would be proud to go up with the Clarets.

"It would be a real highlight and it's something we're capable of," he said.

Burnley go into the home game against Colchester United just two points off the Championship play-off places in 10th place.

He said promotion is a realistic prospect: "As a squad of players, we have an expectancy to do something this year. It's something we're more than capable of doing.

"We've shown we can beat the best teams, and not just that. We've shown we can outplay them, out-fight them and out-pass them."

Unsworth said another sweet moment was his penalty for Wigan against former club Sheffield United in May which ensured the Latics survived relegation from the Premier League.

"Getting released by Wigan (in the summer) was a low point. I didn't expect it," he added.
