![]() | Monday, 24 December, 2001, 11:39 GMT Francis leaves Rovers ![]() Francis' Rovers have endured a poor run of results Gerry Francis has resigned as manager of Bristol Rovers. Francis told the club's website that he had stepped down because of personal problems. "It is with much regret that due to immediate family illness, I am leaving my position as manager and director of football at Bristol Rovers Football Club," Francis said. "The club have been very supportive and given me time off in the hope that my position would improve but unfortunately my problems have become more long term."
Bristol Rovers have endured a poor run of results in the Third Division, having won just five out of the 22 games this season. "Football management is a 24 hour, seven-day-a-week job, and due to my circumstances this simply has not been possible," added Francis. "Following a discussion with the board of directors, we agreed that it would be in the best interest of the club and my family for me to leave." Rovers vice-chairman Geoff Dunford was supportive of Francis' decision. He said: "We all feel sorry for Gerry. "He came here to do a job for us but his personal situation has made it impossible for him to carry on. "Our thoughts and good wishes are with him and his family." |
