Bristol City defender McCombe faces long injury lay-off
McCombe joined Bristol City in 2006 from Lincoln City
Bristol City manager Gary Johnson says defender Jamie McCombe could be out for the rest of the season with a mystery knee injury.
The 27-year-old last played for City as a substitute in their 3-1 win at Leicester on 8 December.
"That's the news that we've sort of got," Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol.
"A couple of specialists have had a look and didn't see anything major there but Jamie feels there is a problem so there must be a problem."
Johnson baffled by McCombe injury
Johnson continued: "We don't know [what the injury is]; we can't put a name to it. The knee is structurally OK.
"The specialists say that as the camera can't find too much, it might just need time to get over whatever it is that he's got.
"It's a shame because we miss that club in our bag and he's done well for us over the seasons. He's as gutted as everybody else and desperately wants to play."
