On-loan John first played in England in 1999 for Nottingham Forest
Bristol City have extended on-loan striker Stern John's spell at the club until the end of the season.
John, who joined on loan from Southampton in October, originally signed until the end of the year.
The 32-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international has made seven starts and four substitute appearances for The Robins, scoring two goals.
But Andy Webster has left the club and returned to Scottish side Rangers after a five-month loan spell.
City boss Gary Johnson revealed he had informally agreed with Southampton to keep John for longer if the move worked out.

"Southampton have told him they won't be offering him a new contract at the end of the campaign and we needed that experienced Championship goal-scorer in our squad," said Johnson.
"We'll see come May how much he's able to give us. He's good in the dressing room and, although you won't see him rushing around on the pitch, he's a very clever player who does a lot of work for the team.
"He's had a few chances since arriving here and could quite easily be on four or five goals. I hope he gets his just rewards."
