Webster has played just five matches in the last two seasons
Bristol City have reacted to losing defender Jamie McCombe with a broken cheekbone by signing Scotland international Andy Webster on loan.
The Glasgow Rangers centre-back will stay at Ashton Gate until January.
Manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol: "It's a fantastic signing for us because of his experience.
"It suits everyone because he needs games and we need him. He's happy to come to the Championship and he already knows some of the Scottish lads here."
Webster first came to prominence during five seasons at Hearts, and the 26-year-old also had a brief spell in the Premier League with Wigan.
"Straight away he said he'd be interested and that was fantastic so we did the deal pretty quickly, which is how I like it" Johnson said.
"He had a stringent medical because he hasn't played many games for a while, but he is a top-class player with caps for Scotland. He's been playing games in pre-season for Rangers so he is ready."
City have been hit by injuries in defence over the last week.
Jamie McCombe is facing at least six weeks out after fracturing his cheekbone in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Derby.
And teenage defender Christian Ribiero will be out for a year with a knee ligament injury.
