Bristol City will not be offering former Manchester United trainee Michael Barnes a contract after seeing him play in a pre-season friendly.

"There isn't an opportunity for him here at the moment," manager Gary Johnson told City's website.

The 20-year-old winger played for 69 minutes of City's 1-1 draw with Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

Barnes, released by United last month, had impressed in a practice match in Bristol last week.

Steve Brooker was on target for City at the New Lawn, turning in the box before beating keeper Terry Burton with a shot.

Forest Green had taken the lead with a 25-yard free-kick in the first half.

City fly to Portugal on Tuesday, where they will play two friendlies. City's only new signing so far, Gavin Williams, will make the trip after missing the Forest Green match.
