Brighton have hit back at Lewes District Council's criticism of the club's work in the community. The council had claimed in submissions to the Government over the proposed new stadium that Albion's community work was "too small for any meaningful use".
However, the Seagulls received the Community Club of the Year prize at Sunday's Football League awards.
"It exposes the blinkered and selfish opposition of the council for what it is," club chairman Dick Knight said.
"To have received the national award is a fantastic achievement in our present circumstances," he told the club website.
The council's submissions to Local Government Secretary Ruth Kelly also stated that the club's community work was "very minor... with few, and even then limited, benefits accruing to the wider community."
The Department of Communities and Local Government recently informed the club that its verdict on the proposed stadium at Falmer would be delivered on or before 9 July.
