Brighton captain Charlie Oatway is set to miss the start of the new season. Oatway has had exploratory surgery on the ankle he broke on Boxing Day 2005 in a game against QPR, which has prevented him from playing since then.
Albion manager Mark McGhee told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "He's likely to miss two to three months.
"It's a big blow for us. We missed him in games last year, and he's a positive influence around the place. It's a pity for us, and for Charlie too."
In May, Oatway had expressed the hope that he would have been able to rejoin his team-mates for pre-season training, which begins this week.
