Brentford have accepted that they must begin their hunt for a new manager to replace Martin Allen. Allen's resignation was reported on Tuesday - but at the time, the Bees insisted he was still under contract to them for a further 12 months.
However, a new statement reads: "Martin has made it clear that he does not wish to be the manager for next season.
"After prolonged discussions, we have accepted this position and put in place a search for a new manager."
Allen, who has not publicly commented on the matter, has been linked with the vacancy at Tranmere, and BBC London 94.9 reported that he had held talks with the Merseyside club.
But the Bees statement continued: "If other clubs seek our permission to talk to Martin about a managerial position, we are prepared to agree to this so long as Brentford Football Club receives the appropriate compensation if he is appointed."
Allen twice led the London club to the play-offs, but the side failed to make it past the semi-final stages, losing to Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea.
The former West Ham, Portsmouth and QPR midfielder was appointed as manager at Griffin Park in March 2004, having previously managed Barnet.
