Pilgrims fans saved club - Newton

York Street
Newton is confident York Street will host football next season

Boston United chairman David Newton says the Pilgrims' fans have helped to save the club from a winding-up order.

Newton announced on Saturday the club had reached an agreement with HM Revenue and Customs to settle their debts and come out of administration.

He told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "Their letters and e-mails were instrumental in helping us achieve what we've done.

Newton said Revenue officials had taken into account the importance of the club to the community.

"The guy at the Revenue said he's been really touched by some of the letters," he added.

"His closing words were that we've got a very special club with very special fans and he wishes us all the best for the future."

The deal with HM Revenue and Customs has to be ratified by a creditors' meeting, but as the Revenue holds the most votes on the decision it is expected to go through.

"It's a great result. When we cut the ticket prices for the last game of the season it was based on really that I did think it would be our last game so it's been a big turnaround," Newton said.

The club is now hoping to talk with the Football Conference to try to resolve any outstanding issues the league has regarding its rules and regulations on settling debts.
