Bolton midfielder Sean Davis is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after surgery on a serious knee injury.
The 30-year-old sustained articular cartilage damage to his right knee during the 3-2 home defeat against Liverpool on 29 August.
Trotters boss Gary Megson said: "We don't want to put an exact timescale on how long Sean will be out of action.
"It's a disappointment for him and ourselves, but injuries happen and we have got to deal with it."
He joined Bolton on a free transfer in July after his contract at Portsmouth expired.
Davis started Bolton's first four games of the season, with Tamir Cohen and Gavin McCann each getting a chance to impress in his absence in the two games since.
