Bolton have revealed they want to draft in a replacement for Jay-Jay Okocha when he captains Nigeria in the Africa Nations Cup.
Okocha could miss up to five Premiership games in the New Year because of his international schedule.
Bolton are resigned to losing him and are keen to fill the gap by signing a midfield player when the transfer window opens in January.
Manager Sam Allardyce will not have any transfer funds so must rely instead on an attractive salary package, according to Trotters assistant boss Phil Brown.
"We are looking in the market to improve the squad over Christmas ahead of the transfer window," said Brown.
"That includes a creative midfield player. If we can get someone to reproduce what Jay-Jay can do, we will probably have to pay 5m!
"Hopefully we can secure someone on a permanent deal. If not a loan could be another avenue.
"While there is no transfer kitty, there is the possibility of an extension of the budget in regards to wages."
Meanwhile, French midfielder Youri Djorkaeff, who has been struggling with a niggling claf injury, has been pencilled in for a run-out when Bolton entertain Brazilian side Sao Paolo in a friendly on Saturday.
"We are looking for him getting 45 minutes minimum under his belt with a view to the Leeds game next week," added Brown.
"It has taken him a while to shake off this injury but you leave it to the player to say if he is fit or not.
"Youri knows his body and if he's 100% right."
