 | | Friday, 19 October, 2001, 08:44 GMT 09:44 UK Allardyce's retirement date  Sam Allardyce is two years into a 10-year contract Bolton manager Sam Allardyce celebrates his 47th birthday on Friday - but he is already talking about retiring. Allardyce, who signed a 10-year contract with Bolton last February, has been in charge of the club for two years.
He plans to walk away from the game at the end of that contract, when he is 56. "If I am lucky enough to manage this club all the way through my contract I would probably look at the situation and think that would be enough for me. "By the time my 56th birthday comes along I would think I would be looking at other things in my life." Gerard Houllier's recent heart scare has made Allardyce more conscious of his own health. "There is very little time for a manager to chill out today. "As John Barnwell, the League Managers' Association chief executive, says, you look after everyone else and sometimes forget to look after yourself. "I am as guilty of that as every other manager but it is something you must adhere to.
"I have been tested over the last three or four years on an annual basis to find out exactly what my position is in health terms. "I have advice given to me on which way I should I proceed. "I take some notice, because of the demands of the job. "You get to the stage in the day where it is your turn to work out but you haven't got the energy for it sometimes. "I am well aware of what the medical people have told me. "I try and do as much as I can but perhaps I should do a little bit more." Stresses and strains Allardyce also believes that English football demands too much of its managers in comparison to other European countries. "The system in other nations doesn't give the same stresses as it does in England. "All you do is get the team ready to play matches. Your responsibilities after that are basically finished. "As a manager in this country, everybody knows what the stresses and strains of it brings." His birthday, falling 24 hours before Bolton's Premiership trip to Manchester United, is unlikely to prove any less stressful. | |
