Nelsen has been a first-team regular since joining Blackburn in 2005
Blackburn defender Ryan Nelsen has signed a new contract at Ewood Park that runs until 2013.
The New Zealand international, 33, was contracted to Rovers until next year, but has penned a one-year extension.
Nelsen joined Blackburn from DC United in 2005 and has made in excess of 200 appearances for the club.
He captained his country in last year's World Cup and, last month, was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to football.
The signing is big fillip for manager Steve Kean, who himself only secured his long-term future at Ewood Park with a new contract this week.
Nelsen was an outspoken opponent of Sam Allardyce's sacking by new owners Venky's in December, telling BBC Radio 5 live at the time: "Not in my wildest dreams did I see this coming.
"A huge big leadership has gone from the club. They [Venky's] have a plan for the club - they must to have made a decision like this. But it's ruthless.
"I feel gutted for the man, the players liked him, the club liked him."
However, by signing an extension to his current deal, Nelsen has thrown his support behind new boss Kean.
