Allardyce singled out praise for makeshift striker Christopher Samba
Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce believes his side need three more points to maintain their Premier League status.
His comments followed Rovers' 2-0 win over Wigan, a victory which takes them six points clear of the drop zone.
"We've got to get one more win, which shows you how difficult it is to get out of being in the bottom three in December," said Allardyce.
"We've clawed our way out slowly and we've responded well. It's a great show of character from the lads."
He added: "The determination everybody showed today really made a difference for us and it is great for us all to go home happy."
Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen scored his first goal for the club, adding to an earlier strike from South Africa striker Benni McCarthy.
But Allardyce singled out defender Christopher Samba for special attention following his call-up as a makeshift striker because of a lack of options up front.
"At this stage we think he's the best we've got to play up there," he stated. "We've tried other combinations which have been a little too lightweight.
"He showed some good touches and he's certainly a nuisance up there."
Blackburn's prospects for survival would increase further should Newcastle fail to beat Portsmouth on Monday.
"We're the ones who have won out of the bottom six and that is a big bonus for us," commented Allardyce.
"But it doesn't really concern me about what kind of pressure that puts on Newcastle."
