Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish says James McFadden's knee operation has been a success and hopes the striker will return within three weeks.

McFadden underwent keyhole surgery to repair a meniscus tear in the joint following the draw with Newcastle.

"The operation went very well and James feels fine," McLeish told the club's official website.

"It's important that we got him sorted before the final games. Hopefully he'll be back in two or three weeks."

McLeish knows Blues will struggle to cope without their key players ahead of the run-in as they continue to fight relegation.

"We can ill-afford to lose players like James and Olivier Kapo from what is a small and inexperienced squad," he added.

"These are major blows to any team never mind Birmingham City when we don't have the resources."
