Bruce yet to receive Upson offer
Matthew Upson
Upson returned in November after a seven-month injury lay-off
Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce says he is yet to receive an offer for want-away centre-back Matthew Upson.

Upson, 27, is out of contract in the summer of 2008 and his desire to leave St Andrews during the current transfer window has alerted several clubs.

But Bruce said: "I must have read he is going to 12 different clubs and I have not had a single phone call.

"There has not been one inquiry. Not one manager has rung me about Matthew and no chairman has been in touch."

Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham or Portsmouth are among the sides to have been linked with a 6m swoop for Upson - but Bruce believes he will not leave City until the end of the season.

The former Luton and Arsenal defender only returned to action in November after seven months out with a ruptured Achilles.

And Bruce explained: "Matty's price won't go down between now and the summer.

"If he is worth 6m now, he is going to be worth 6m in the summer.

"The big clubs usually do business in the summer. People act now out of panic. Of course, if Chelsea who come in and offer 10m tomorrow, we know what the score is.

"But most clubs, especially the big ones, will look at Matt's situation and think 'hang on a minute, he's just recovered from a long injury' and they will be monitoring his progress over the next two or three months.

"If they are going to spend big money they will want to make sure he is 100% fit. Matt's mind-set is he just wants to play."
