Fairclough fashions thinking team
Barnet manager Paul Fairclough
When we've gone down in a game there's an urgency to get that back straight away

Paul Fairclough
Barnet boss Paul Fairclough wants to see his squad thinking about football more after a year of underachievement.

"I don't want kneejerk responses next season, I want calculated responses," Fairclough told BBC Sport.

"It's about maturity and consistency. Technically we've got some wonderful players, but they've not had cohesion when it comes to winning games.

"We've shown we're a match for anybody, but it's about the intellectual aspect of how they apply themselves in games."

Barnet finished 14th in League Two, but in an effort to improve on that Fairclough is going back to his roots.

The former teacher is determined his squad learn lessons from a stop-start campaign.

"I've told the players our season will be remembered not for the goals we scored but the goals we conceded," he added.

"We can keep cleans sheets, we've had eight of them, but we've also conceded five twice!

"When we've gone down in a game there's an urgency to get that back straight away.

"But there is time to get that back and at this level you need to grind out results and not rush them.

"The mentality in our league is very much that teams make sure they don't lose and maybe they will be able to get a win.

"I'm a great believer in learning theories and one is that once people are subjected to learning there is a period after that learning which is a rest period where learning takes place.

"I've seen it as an educationalist and I believe some players will come back after the summer with better mentalities."

But Fairclough knows he needs to bring in new faces to supplement any improved mentality in his squad.

He has already released a host of players, including veteran duo Andy Hessenthaler and Paul Warhurst.

Between them they boast 78 years and in addition 35-year-old club captain Ian Hendon is set to be shown the door as a player, although Fairclough wants him to stay on in another capacity.

"They are no longer the number one names on the team sheet, for obvious reasons," Fairclough added.

Reaching the FA Cup fourth round was the highlight of the season - but it was also a low point

"But they have shown the younger players how important it is to be professional, how to have a long career and they have had a big influence.

"I feel humble and proud to have stood alongside the three of them.

"And having dealt with non-league players all my career, Andy in particular gave me an insight into professionalism after we came up from the Conference.

"He treats his game as a job and is professional about his job. He enjoys it, but it's a job.

"A lot of younger players like what's around the game these days as opposed to loving the game."

So as well as educating his players to be patient on the park, he will also be pointing out how privileged they are to be playing the game in the first place.

And that vacuum of experience in the changing room means the onus will be on Fairclough to get the message through as he nurtures a much younger squad.

But it is a task the 57-year-old is relishing after a frustrating year.

"Reaching the FA Cup fourth round was the highlight of the season, it was the first time the club had got that far, but it was also a low point," Fairclough reflected.

"If a team like Barnet go that far you expect them to pull a big fish, but we got Northampton in the third round and then Plymouth. We didn't get a bite of the cherry either time.

"At our level your season is judged by whether you gain promotion and if you have a good cup run and get some money.

"We didn't do either and the cup had a detrimental effect elsewhere as before we knew it we had lost touch with the play-offs.

"So we have resources, but not the resources that some clubs have got in our league.

"There will be a lot of work done in the close season and there will always be a case for the bright young thing to be given their opportunity at Barnet. There's part of that in me."
