Former Sheffield Wednesday and Spurs manager Peter Shreeves has been named as the new head coach of Barnet.

A week after John Still returned to his role of director of football at Underhill, Shreeves links up with the ambitious north London club.

Shreeves, 60, who quit the Owls three months ago, has brought in Martin Allen as first team coach and former Bees favourite Paul Wilson as assistant coach.

"It's an accurate statement to say this is a step-down, but Barnet are a football club and football management is my job," Shreeves said of his appointment.

"When you are not working you miss football and I've certainly missed coaching and dealing with players and their problems.

"I've been up and down the country working, but I've decided it's time I worked from home and the London scene was where I made my name.

"I saw the team play recently and I realised they needed to find a new method of playing. I'm here to the end of the season and I'd be delighted to stay beyond that."

Shreeves began his coaching career at Charton where he was in charge of the youth set-up.

He then moved through the ranks at Spurs where he became the reserve coach, first team coach and then manager.

Shreeves guided Tottenham to third in the Premiership before leaving the club.

After a spell at Watford, Shreeves returned to White Hart Lane as coach under manager Terry Venables.

He spent three years as assistant to Glenn Hoddle at Chelsea before moving to Wednesday to work under David Pleat and Ron Atkinson.

Allen, meanwhile, is part of of the famous Allen footballing family.

He began his coaching career at Portsmouth where he became reserve team manager.

The 36-year-old former Spurs and West Ham midfielder moved onto Reading where he was first team coach before being made assistant manager.
