Stephen O'Halloran is currently on loan at Southampton

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 star, 20, is currently gaining first-team experience on loan at Southampton.

He told BBC WM: "The gaffer's just told me to keep working hard and I've just extended my contract for another 18 months so that's a good sign.

"I went on a pre-season tour with Villa and played at left-back. I think he prefers me there."

O'Halloran is the latest graduate from Villa's academy which has also produced the likes of Gabby Agbonlahor, Luke Moore and Craig Gardner.

O'Halloran says another bright prospect, Gary Cahill, will be missed after sealing his �5m move to Bolton.

"Gary's been a great player since he came through and he got that great goal a few years ago against Blues.

"It's a shame to see him go but obviously there's a lot of competition at centre-back."

O'Halloran is hoping he can emulate Cahill in making the most of his loan move.

"A lot of players have come through over the years and going on loan helps.

"Gary went on loan and did himself great justice at Burnley and Sheffield United.
