Curbishley has ruled himself out of the running to become Villa boss

Curbishley, who resigned as Charlton boss in May, has been strongly tipped for the post vacated by O'Leary.

But the 48-year-old told The Daily Mail: "Obviously I'd have come back early if I'd been given the chance to manage England.

"But I didn't get that chance so I've decided it's best to wait until October and take my time over a return."

He added: "I did 15 years without a break at Charlton and feel I have to recharge my batteries fully."

Martin O'Neill is another one of the front-runners for the post and he is likely to now become the favourite.

O'Leary left the club on Wednesday following the controversy of an inquiry into a players' statement criticising chairman Doug Eillis and the running of the club.

The Irishman was absolved of blame after allegations that he had played a part in instigating the players' statement but both parties decided to go their separate ways in the wake of recent events.
