O'Leary must sell before he buys
Aston Villa manager David O'Leary
O'Leary will have to raise his own money for transfers
Aston Villa boss David O'Leary admits that any summer signings will have to be self-financed.

O'Leary said: "The agenda has been set for me this summer in that I have to sell players to get people in. That is what I have to do.

"I have a list of targets but it depends on how much money I can generate by selling.

"We have been shopping around at this club in that way for quite a while and I do not think that has changed."

O'Leary is expected to hold on to his job after Villa flirted with relegation before their eventual 16th-place finish in the Premiership.

Villa chairman Doug Ellis has made it clear to O'Leary that he will have to raise his own money for any summer squad improvements.

I think the fans will have to be patient
Villa boss David O'Leary

O'Leary added: "The only way we are going to be able to change things around is by changing players around and generating money in that way.

"If you take Milan Baros out of the equation, we have brought in a lot of players on free transfers or paid a couple of hundred thousand pounds here and there.

"The other scenario is if we don't get bids in for anybody then we will go with what we have got, for next season, that is the hard reality."

In any event, O'Leary does not expect much movement in the transfer market until after this summer's World Cup finals.

He said: "This year could be a funny year. Four years ago, nothing happened until after the World Cup.

"I know who I would love to get and I would love to get them in the first few weeks.

"But I think, in general, nothing much happens until after the World Cup. I think the fans will have to be patient."
