Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be without first-choice central defensive pairing of Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure at Aston Villa on Saturday. Campbell is out for two weeks after twisting his ankle against Manchester United on Tuesday so will also miss England's game with Holland next week.
"Sol's injury leaves us short in defence," Wenger said.
"I don't know what I will do yet but I have a little bit more time to think about it."
Toure remains suspended after receiving a three-match ban for elbowing Newcastle's Alan Shearer.
Pascal Cygan started against United, with Justin Hoyte replacing Campbell.
Philippe Senderos remains sidelined with a knee injury - leaving Wenger with few options against Villa.
If Wenger decides that 19-year-old Hoyte is too inexperienced to start alongside Cygan, the Gunners boss could play skipper Patrick Vieira in defence.
Arsenal now trail leaders Chelsea by 13 points and Wenger is hoping his team recover quickly from the demoralising defeat to United.
"It is demoralising but we have our pride to do as well as we can," said Wenger.
"We have a great spirit and this is a great occasion to show it.
"We can't feel sorry for ourselves for too long. When you want to be at the top level, you have to fight when it goes well and also when it doesn't go well. "This team has character and now we must show it. We have gone through difficult periods like this before and it's part of our job."
Meanwhile, England play Holland in a friendly at Villa Park on 9 February.
