The Gunners were humbled 3-0 by their Italian opponents at Highbury on Wednesday night.

And Wenger is warning his team they cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves with the clash against the Premiership champions looming.

"We can complain and cry the whole night but that will not change the result. The only thing we can do is to respond," the Frenchman said.

"We must not become desperate. We have lost one game at home but there are still five to play and we are top of the Premier League.

"We must show character and spirit against Manchester United on Sunday."

Wenger was understandably bemused that his side - who have started their Premiership campaign in such impressive fashion - had performed so poorly against Inter.

"We made defensive mistakes but we also made mistakes up front with our final ball," he said.

"I am disappointed as I felt that everything turned against us. Inter played well but they were not unbeatable and the difference between the two teams was not 3-0.

"We gave away a cheap goal and had to chase the game, which made it easy for them.

"The second turning point was the penalty as we could have got back to 2-1 down, but instead it became 3-0.

"Am I shocked? Well, I would certainly say that I wasn't pleased. They were scoring goal after goal as, in games like that, every time the opponent has the ball, they score.

"Inter were just sharper in their minds and took advantage of our mistakes. Then again, defeat is defeat, whether it's 3-0 or 1-0."

Arsenal have now won just one of their past 10 Champions League ties, with no victories in any of their last six home games in the competition.

While they can still relaunch their group campaign, they must now do so in Moscow and Kiev, with question-marks looming ever larger about their defence.

Inter coach Hector Cuper described the win as the "best possible start" to the group for last season's beaten semi-finalists.

"Arsenal had to face an almost perfect Inter side and they could never find the space to play the way that they wanted," he said.

"I would say that we played very well, rather than they played badly. We are extremely satisfied and this result will give us much confidence. This shows what we are capable of."
