Barrow's most recent managerial job was at Bury from 2003 to 2005

He replaces Dalton Steele, who resigned at the end of December, as Graham Heathcote's number two.

Barrow, who also had two spells as Chester manager, played for Altrincham from 1979 to 1981 before moving into the Football League with Wigan.

The 53-year-old lost his job at Bury in September 2005, and had recently been working as a scout.
