Allan Maitland has turned Alloa's fortunes round |
Alloa Athletic's Allan Maitland lived up to his pre-match billing as joint Second Division boss of the month after a convincing win over Berwick Rangers. Maitland's side take a 4-0 lead into the second leg of the play-off final.
And Maitland told BBC Sport: "A lot of nerves were away after Saturday's win over Arbroath as getting to the final was the big thing for us.
"Berwick had a bad night and will be hoping to do better on Sunday, but I would be disappointed if we lost now."
Alloa had been 14 points adrift at the bottom of the Second Division when Maitland took over from Tom Hendry in February.
But they overhauled Dumbarton to avoid automatic relegation then edged out Third Division Arbroath in the play-off semi-final.
Now they are strong favourites against the team who missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference.
"If we retain our status in the Second Division, it will be a fantastic achievement," added Maitland.
"Tom Hendrie had brought in good players, but I think they just needed a change at the time."
Maitland was joint winner of the Bell's award for April along with Peterhead's Iain Stewart.
Meanwhile, Maitaland has signed midfielder Paul Thomson from junior outfit Vale of Clyde.
But goalkeeper James Evans and midfielders Paul Mortimer and David Greenhill have been released.
