Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee insists there is no rush to tie up a new deal for left-back Charlie Mulgrew.
The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and the player's agent, Kevin Drinkell, has urged the Dons to resolve the issue swiftly.
However, McGhee said: "There's no time limit. The ball is in Charlie and the agent's court.
"There's nothing we can do about that apart from making what we believe to be a really fantastic offer."
If no new deal is concluded before the end of the year Mulgrew would be able to negotiate with other clubs from January.
The former Scotland Under-21 international has been a key player for Aberdeen since his arrival last season from Wolves.
And the Pittodrie club opened contract talks with Mulgrew, who can also operate in midfield, last month.
A dead-ball specialist with dangerous curling free-kicks and corners, Mulgrew has scored three goals this season.
