Diamond covets Aberdeen captaincy

Zander Diamond
Diamond was the Aberdeen vice captain last season

Zander Diamond hopes he can captain Aberdeen next season but insists he is taking nothing for granted while boss Mark McGhee assesses the candidates.

McGhee has indicated he will share the armband among a group of players during pre-season before making a decision.

"You don't just want one player on the park being the leader, you want to have 11 players as captain, supporting each other," Diamond told RedTV.

"But, if the role was to come up, I would be grateful."

The skipper's armband is up for grabs following the departure of Scott Severin to Watford and Diamond served as vice captain last term.

"It's a totally new set-up now," said the 24-year-old defender.

"I've just came back as a normal player and I'm working hard in training and hopefully doing enough.

"But we've got different qualities in different players in the dressing room.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

"I've come through the ranks and for all the scouts and the coaching staff who have worked with me, I'm sure it would be an honour for them as well to see a player who has come through the ranks captaining the club.

"We will wait and see and maybe we will talk about it over in Austria. If it happens, it happens."

Diamond is likely to have competition for the captain's role from goalkeeper Jamie Langfield and midfielder Mark Kerr, although McGhee will be hoping to recruit a number of new faces in the next few weeks.
