Aberdeen midfielder Mark Kerr has apologised for getting injured on a night out, meaning he will miss Sunday's match against Hibernian.

Kerr, 27, has been charged after being badly hurt during an "altercation" which happened on Tuesday night.

"I am totally gutted," Kerr told the Aberdeen website.

"I sincerely apologise to the fans, the club and my team-mates but I'm sure the lads will do what's needed to keep our European dreams alive."

Aberdeen need to beat Hibernian, and hope Dundee United lose against Rangers, in order to finish fourth in the Scottish Premier League and qualify for next season's Europa League.

Kerr, who arrived on a free transfer from Dundee United last summer, has been a regular in Jimmy Calderwood's Dons side this season, playing 38 times.

The player required hospital treatment after the incident which is believed to have happened near The Priory in the city's Belmont Street.

Calderwood refused to comment on why his players were involved in a night out prior to such an important game.

However, an Aberdeen FC spokesman said: "Some of the players were out on a social evening ahead of their day off on Wednesday and there was an incident in a city centre club which spilled out on to the street.

"As a result, Mark received injuries which needed treatment in hospital and consequently he will miss Sunday's game against Hibs.

"We are currently attempting to establish exactly what occurred although I can confirm Mark Kerr has been charged in connection with the incident.

He added: "If any of our players are found to have instigated any trouble, they will be dealt with severely.

"At the moment our main concern is that Mark makes a full and speedy recovery from the injuries sustained."

A Grampian Police spokesman said officers attended a disturbance in Belmont Street involving a number of men in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He added that three men would be reported to the procurator fiscal fiscal in connection with the incident, and inquiries were continuing.
