Milne says Aberdeen are currently in good shape for the future
Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne reckons the Pittodrie club are going in the right direction both financially and on the pitch.
Milne also believes it would prove fruitless to pour his own personal wealth into the club, adding that it must sustain itself.
"I think we're on the right tracks, but we still have a long way to go," he told BBC Sport.
"It's fundamental that we live within our means."
Aberdeen last month announced the most successful trading results in the club's history, making an operating profit of 2.3m.
The return to the European stage was largely credited with that.
But Milne - who was speaking after the club's 105th annual meeting - acknowledged that, along with good financial figures, the club's supporters want to see consistency from the team.
"It's important you keep the right balance within the game," he said.
"We've got to be delivering consistently in the short-term, but it's equally, if not more important, to ensure the stability of the club medium to long-term."
Despite an improved four seasons under the stewardship of manager Jimmy Calderwood, some supporters remain restless that consistent performances and silverware have not being provided.
Milne, though, says that progress is being made in that direction.
"I believe - in the last two or three seasons - that we've competed very effectively, although there's still some way to go with consistency and the football," he said.
"But I genuinely believe that Jimmy has moved the team a long way over the last three or four years and he's got the football operation going very much in the right direction.
"There's maybe some aspects that frustrate the fans with some questioning his selection, his tactics. But that'll always be the case, irrespective of who the manager is here.
"I think Jimmy himself recognises he hasn't got all the fans on board and that he's got to work hard to get them on board."
Milne also revealed that it will be another two to three years before the matter of site selection for a new stadium would have to be decided.
He admitted that he and the club's shareholders would have to play a big role when it came to financing the eventual move away from Pittodrie.
