Dons concern over fans' treatment
An Aberdeen fan is escorted clear with blood pouring from his head
Some Aberdeen fans suffered injuries in Madrid
Aberdeen are writing to Uefa "as a matter of urgency" following violent clashes before and after the team's match in Madrid on Thursday.

Spanish media reported that at least 17 people suffered injuries during running battles in the Spanish city.

A club spokesman said they would be pointing out "in particular the way in which some of our fans were treated outside the stadium".

Aberdeen lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in their Uefa Cup Group B game.

And video footage shows dramatic confrontations between fans and riot police, with flares and bottles flying through the air.

The club is also investigating claims that a fan was allegedly raped in the Spanish capital the night before the match.

As a result of our concerns for potential problems, we involved the consul at an early stage and they have been aware of the relevant issues

Aberdeen statement

An estimated 6,000 Aberdeen fans are believed to have made the trip, with only 3,000 tickets officially allocated to the Scottish club.

In a statement posted on their website, Aberdeen said their security staff had remained in Madrid and were working closely with the British Consul and Grampian Police.

The club said one Aberdeen fan, Ian Bremner, 38, who lives in Denmark, was rushed to hospital after suffering a head wound inflicted by a police baton.

"Thankfully, Ian is now out of intensive care and is on the mend," said the spokesman.

"As far as we can ascertain, he is the only supporter to have been hospitalised as a result of trouble while, significantly, there are no reports of any Aberdeen fans being arrested."

The club said that, despite being told at an official Uefa meeting that the match was a sell out, there were thousands of empty places in all areas of Madrid's Vicente Calderon Stadium.

"As a result of our concerns for potential problems, we involved the consul at an early stage and they have been aware of the relevant issues," the spokesman added.

"Those, along with the reported mistreatment of Aberdeen supporters, will form the basis of a detailed report that we will be submitting to the governing body over the course of the next few days."
