Jimmy Calderwood was disappointed to lose a sloppy goal

"The thing is, we know we can play better," he told BBC Sport after the 1-1 draw in Uefa Cup Group B.

"If you are beaten by a much better team, you can accept it, but this feels like a defeat.

"They are a good team and can play the ball about for fun, but they were not causing us many problems until we gave away the goal just before the break."

Aberdeen had gone ahead through Zander Diamond, only for Chelsea target Branislav Ivanovic to equalise with the last kick of the first half.

"It was a stupid moment to give a goal away," said Calderwood, whose side lost their first group game away to Panithanaikos.

"Concentration levels have to be high, but we are making expensive mistakes that are costing us.

"If we had went in at 1-0 at half time, it could have been different.

"But it says a lot when a team who have spent the money they have are happy to take a point from Pittodrie."

Goalscorer Diamond was more upbeat, stressing that he thought Aberdeen could still qualify and quoting his assistant boss.

"Jimmy Nicholl reminded us that three teams went through last year with four points," said the defender.

Diamond admitted that his side had struggled to cope with the disappointment of losing a goal so late in the first half.

"We started the game well and got the goal we wanted," he said.

"But we lost a sloppy goal before half time and it knocked the stuffing out of us a bit and took us a while to recover."
