Action taken over Hampden pitch

Parts of the Hampden Park pitch are being relaid to make it a surface more suitable for Saturday's Scottish Cup final.

But the Hampden Park Company will make sure that fewer events are held there next season in the lead-up to the staging of the Champions League final.

There had been major concerns about the state of the playing surface, which was bare and bumpy for the two Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Hampden has hosted 60 events this season, including American Football, pop concerts and home games by Second Division club and stadium owners Queen's Park.

The latest event there was Saturday's Amateur Cup final, when Dalziel High School FP defeated St Patrick's 2-1 after extra time.

Poor winter

Repair work has subsequently taken place, somewhat mirroring the problems at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff prior to England's FA Cup final.

Hampden chief executive David Kells said: "The pitch was fine up until the middle towards the end of March.

"And then the result of the poor winter and the cold weather meant we didn't get the growth for the semi-finals and we were disappointed with the condition.

"It is something that we would not want to see repeated."

Hampden's management insist that summer pop concerts and gridiron matches will not damage the pitch further.
