Hearts are demanding answers from the Scottish Premier League about what they claim was the late postponement of their game against Dundee United.

Saturday's match was called off because of a waterlogged pitch only two and a half hours before kick-off at United's Tannadice Stadium.

Hearts manager director David Southern said: "We'll be writing to the Scottish Premier League to outline our concerns.

"And to understand the process involved in this postponement."

Hearts stress on their website that they agreed with the decision to postpone the match because of a waterlogged pitch but want to know why there had not been an earlier call-off.

"We entirely understand the anger and frustration of our supporters particularly those that travel from across the UK for our matches," said Southern.

"Our concern centres around the fact that the weather in Dundee was extremely poor overnight and that the decision to call the game off came as no surprise in the circumstances.

"We would have welcomed a much earlier decision to try and avoid this outcome.

"We remain entirely supportive of Dundee United and the football authorities.

"But we must ensure we do everything in our power to remember that supporters are the heartbeat of our game and we must treat them accordingly."

Saturday's match was postponed following an 1145 GMT pitch inspection, called because of heavy overnight rain, ahead of the 1500 kick-off.

No new date for the match has been set yet by the SPL.

Kilmarnock provide the opposition for both teams affected by the call-off, with Hearts travelling to Rugby Park on Tuesday and United heading there next Saturday.
