Levein is a frontrunner to succeed Craig Burley as Scotland boss

Dundee United manager Craig Levein has admitted that boredom might deter him from taking over as Scotland boss.

Levein is a leading candidate for the post and will meet with the Scottish Football Association by Tuesday to discuss succeeding George Burley.

However, former national coach Walter Smith has warned Levein that he will miss day-to-day dealings with players if he takes on the role.

"It's an issue," Levein said of the fear of becoming bored with the job.

"The purpose of the meeting in my eyes is to find out a lot more about the job itself and find out what it entails.

"If it's just seven games, six games, five games a season, I don't know what I'm going to do for the rest of the time - if I get offered the job.

"What I want to do is try to speak to the people concerned and find out what's involved."

The 45-year-old would not reveal what his exact demands will be when he meets with the SFA.

He may seek to have control over more than just first-team affairs after admitting he would need something to fill the void left by a lack of daily involvement in managerial matters.

Levein wants to sit down with SFA chief executive Gordon Smith sooner rather than later in order to end the speculation over his future.

"I think that some sort of certainty one way or the other in the near future would help everybody," he said after United's Scottish Premier League match against Hamilton was called off because of heavy snow on Saturday.

The former Scotland international repeated that he was "dead keen" to manage his country but claimed he had not heard from the SFA since they requested permission to speak to him on Thursday.

Levein has been in charge at Tannadice since October 2006 and still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract.

The Tangerines will seek at least half a million pounds in compensation if their current manager is offered the Scotland post.

Levein is the 1/3 favourite with the bookmakers and, although it is thought that he is one of five names on the SFA shortlist, is appears likely that he will be offered the job if he and Smith can reach agreement.

Former Hibernian manager John Collins is second favourite at 8/1, while it is believed that the SFA has been keen to speak to those who have worked with 61-year-old former Sweden coach Lars Lagerback, who is quoted at 12/1.

Rangers manager Walter Smith is quoted at 10/1 to take back his former job, but it is believed that he can now be discounted along with former Blackburn, Celtic and Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish.
