Advocaat is replaced by Alex McLeish and Ferguson skippers Rangers to the treble in season 2002/03, also winning player of the year awards for that campaign
Months later, Ferguson joins Blackburn Rovers in a �7.5m move and is reunited with former Rangers boss Graeme Souness, who oversaw his early development
Disaster strikes for Ferguson in December 2003 as he sustains a kneecap fracture during Rovers' win over Newcastle United
After recovering from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Ferguson is made captain of the Ewood Park club by Souness, shortly before the manager departs for Newcastle and is replaced by Mark Hughes
McLeish brings Ferguson back to Ibrox in January 2005 and the pair once again enjoy success with the League Cup and SPL title later that same year
Ferguson endures a turbulent relationship with McLeish's successor Paul Le Guen, who strips the midfielder of the Ibrox captaincy and drops him from the first team days before the Frenchman himself leaves Rangers by mutual consent

Ferguson, who became Scotland captain in 2004, scores against Italy in a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier but it proves in vain as the Scots narrowly miss out on the finals. To date, Ferguson has never appeared in the finals of a major international tournament
Rangers embark on a lucrative European run in season 2007/08 and Ferguson breaks the record of European appearances by a Rangers player held by John Greig (pictured). Ferguson also breaks Kenny Dalglish's record of European appearances by a Scottish player
The unfancied Ibrox side win a penalty shoot-out against Fiorentina to reach the 2008 Uefa Cup final
But there is to be no European glory for Ferguson in the Manchester final as Zenit St Petersburg, managed by Advocaat, record a 2-0 triumph. Ferguson is consoled afterwards by assistant manager and former team-mate Ally McCoist
Ferguson and club-mate Allan McGregor are dropped to the bench for Scotland's World Cup qualifier against Iceland after a breach of discipline and the pair become embroiled in more controversy when they make gestures during the Hampden victory
In the days that follow, Ferguson is stripped of the Rangers captaincy for a second time and is suspended by his club, placing his Ibrox future in doubt. He is also told that, along with McGregor, he will no longer be considered for international selection
