![]() | Monday, 22 October, 2001, 14:55 GMT 15:55 UK Shota: Temuri will be a hit ![]() Ketsbaia (right) was a big success with Newcastle Rangers striker Shota Arveladze has tipped fellow Georgian Temuri Ketsbaia to make a big impact in Scottish football. Ketsbaia, the former Newcastle forward, joined Dundee earlier in the week to end an unhappy spell at Wolves. His period at Molineux was considered 'a complete waste of money' by Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey, as the deal to take the former Newcastle star to Dundee was being finalised. The Tayside club bought out his Molineux contract but bad weather, which waterlogged the Dens Park pitch, prevented him from making a debut against Motherwell.
Instead, it was left to Arveladze to fly the flag for Georgia and the Rangers man marked the occasion with a goal in his side's 2-0 win over St Johnstone in Perth. Ketsbaia became the fourth Georgian to try his luck in the Scottish Premier League when he joined fellow countrymen Giorgi Nemsadze, the national team captain, and young defender Zura Khizanishvili at Dens. Ketsbaia is nearing the end of his career now but Arveladze said he believed his pal still had much to offer. He said: "Yes, I have spoken with him. He is my friend. I am happy more Georgians are coming to Scotland. We will have a nice New Year together. "He is a great player. He improved in England with Newcastle although he has had some problems with managers. But he is a good boy. "He is a quality player and very experienced and I think he is a good choice for them."
However, Ketsbaia will be hard pressed to make as instant an impact as Arveladze has already managed at Ibrox. The striker scored with almost his first touch on his debut and the diving header at McDiarmid Park was his fourth goal in just three games. Arveladze was forced to wait six weeks for that debut because of an injury picked up on international duty and has also had to miss games because he is ineligible for Uefa Cup fixtures having already played for Ajax in the Champions League qualifier against Celtic. The Georgian hitman reckoned he had already gained an insight how the Scottish game compares to the Dutch league. He said: "It is physically stronger than in Holland. For 90 minutes you can feel the defender's breath on the back of your neck." | Other top Scot Prem stories: Links to more Scot Prem stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
