Nine-man Dundee hung on to win a bad-tempered contest at Dens Park after the visitors missed a penalty kick.
Gary Harkins scored the decisive goal for the home side with a well-taken free-kick on 23 minutes.
Just after the hour Queens striker David Weatherston was toppled but Rab Douglas saved Derek Holmes' spot-kick.
Netan Sansara and Nicholas Riley each picked up two yellow cards but the visitors could do nothing with their advantage in the closing 15 minutes.
