Ross Campbell's late penalty gave Forfar a slender advantage going into the second leg of their Division Two play-off semi-final.
The visitors came close to opening the scoring when Martyn Fotheringham's 25-yard effort struck the bar.
Campbell also found the bar with a header in first half injury-time.
Simon Lynch was denied by the woodwork for the hosts before Jamie Barclay fouled Bryan Deasley in the box and Campbell scored from the spot.
